this blog is dedicated to japanese kobans 1876-92 . .. the first bilingual typographic issues of the “Imperial Japanese Post” . Edoardo Chiossone of Italy designed most, but not all the issues… I hope you enjoy reading various topics presented over time … thanks for visiting . a member of ISJP.ORG since 1969 … have assisted the “forgery project” from 1995 … my outlook reflected in posts offers a new rationalization of koban imitations … you may post your comments : but please stay on topic … chiossone taught at a graphics school in Tokyo … I have often pondered if some of the copyists, were in fact students of the master … modern artviews were developing in japan and elsewhere … as well, competition for newer printing technologies … though chiossone pioneered typography or letterpress in japan, lithography was fast expanding … chromo-lithography had roots…

recently from japan, I have seen 2 imperf b10 repros of the 45sen and 50sen kobans … both bear mihon markings … also an unused 1yen has appeared with inverted crest on white paper … a warning was posted in JP-isjp.org some years ago, mentioned that kobans exist with altered perfs, and fake mihon ovpts … (never issued by IJPO)....
